Would be good if hotels also gave discounts/points for not changing bed linen daily. We don't at home so why not reward frugal thinking.

I see what you mean but by now Sony does kinda own the big, expansive 'color in motion' platform thanks to Juan Cabral's original work. So having the natives asianise it a bit is quite a logical step i suppose.

It is no secret that a large chunk of a regional creative chiefs salaries are pegged to how creative the individual offices under them are. And awards are the only tangible way to judge this. That is why young creatives are made to feel the pressure to do ads for awards, and if you trace it back, it always originates from the person who's at the very top of the creative tree. After all, his salary depends on it. Scam will only stop when regional chiefs find a more creative way of rewarding their creative heads....like maybe on the basis on the new business they bring in? I think that is the only way.

And for those who don't know me, I might now be at CP+B, but I worked in Asia for 3 years and do know its frustrations and limitations but I still don't think that should allow work to be put forward as "real" when it's only run once in IS magazine.

Maybe Cannes should have a "concept" award where they set a specific brief (so there is a focus to the work) and creatives work towards that? Just an idea which I'm sure will be hated by anyone who just likes doing work where they are the client, strategist and cd.

There's a massive difference between concept cars and scam ads because the car manufacturers don't claim their product is not just in the market, but being bought on a mass scale.

And while a lot of scam has been "bought" by a client, the reality is that these people are rarely the manufacturer but a small distributor who puts their name to the communication because they don't have to pay and they could do with the free publicity.

To claim this isn't scam but "innovation" is hilarious especially as the agencies tend to claim it's real work.

I do believe giving creatives the ability to show what they're capable of doing is important, but entering it into awards - even if it has run in some small magazine - is wrong, even in Asia, because all it does is undermine the value and credibility of the industry.

addendum: By 'scam' I am referring to work that was client approved and actually ran somewhere. The work that doesn't meet these two criteria is downright criminal. So maybe I should call it Initiative work.

I agree with what Mike says. I thought it was a little funny, this whole monkey business. Not hilarious, not fall down funny, but good for a laugh. It is after all, just advertising. Aren't we the industry that pretended to tag airforce-1? On a different note, this whole issue of scams could be looked at like this: every year detroit comes out with these 'concept cars'. they are spectacular in styling and engineering. They push the industry forward. They foster innovation. Will they ever be produced? Probably not, but it's a great showcase of thinking that can move everyone forward and provide an opportunity for unconventional thinking. The same is true of the fashion world: all that amazing stuff you see on the runways is not the same as the real production line. But it is unbridled innovation. And whether cars or clothes, seeing it inspires people. If there was no scam, it'd probably be a pretty boring industry in asia.
